Don Harshbarger

President

Don built Top Coat Asphalt Paving & Sealing the hard way—one driveway at a time. Founded in 2005, the company began with nothing more than a bucket, a squeegee, and Don’s relentless work ethic. While working long shifts at General Electric (GE), Don spent his evenings sealcoating driveways, all while raising his daughter Emily and newborn son, Nathan.

When GE closed its Canonsburg plant in 2014, Don didn’t slow down—he went all in. He expanded Top Coat into a full-service asphalt paving company, turning grit and determination into a business known for quality craftsmanship, reliability, and pride in every job.

Today, Don remains hands-on—bidding projects, leading crews, and setting the standard on every job site. Outside of work, he’s a devoted husband to his wife Sarah, a proud father, an avid golfer when time allows, and an RV enthusiast always ready for the next campground adventure.

Sonny

Estimator

Sonny joined the Top Coat team in 2014, bringing with him an impressive 45 years of asphalt industry experience and a lifetime of knowledge you simply can’t learn from a textbook.

At the time, Sonny was retired, but when Don approached him seeking mentorship and guidance to help grow the business and expand into asphalt, Sonny decided to “give the kid a chance.” That chance turned into something much bigger.

Eleven years later, the two men built not only a successful operation but also a genuine bond rooted in trust, respect, and shared pride in doing things the right way. To this day, Don often says how blessed he was to have crossed paths with Sonny and learned from his experience.

When Sonny isn’t drafting and estimating, you’ll likely find him tending to his garden, fishing, tinkering with home projects, or spending quality time with his two sons and beloved grandchildren.

His steady guidance, deep industry knowledge, and heart for family continue to shape Top Coat every single day.

Tom

Foreman

With 10 years of experience in the asphalt industry, Tom has been a key part of Top Coat’s growth since its early days following the closure of the GE plant. From the beginning, he took on a hands-on role in all aspects of the business, helping build the strong foundation the company stands on today.

As foreman, Tom leads our crews with precision, professionalism, and a commitment to quality. He ensures every project runs efficiently and meets the high standards Top Coat is known for — from start to finish.

Outside of work, Tom enjoys hunting, watching sports, spending time with his boys, his Great Dane, and living the country life.

Tammi

Office Manager

Tammi Ferguson has been an essential part of the Top Coat Sealing team for the past five years, serving as our office manager and helping keep the company running smoothly behind the scenes. Her responsibilities include billing, payroll, measuring jobs, assisting employees with their day-to-day needs, organizing office operations, and handling countless other tasks that help make Top Coat successful.

Tammi’s journey with Top Coat began with a phone call from Owner and President Don Harshbarger. Knowing she was looking for a part-time job, Don reached out and asked if she would consider joining the company. Tammi’s response was, “Don, I love you to death, but I do not like to sweat! I can’t be out in the field in the heat and cold weather.” Don quickly replied, “No, Tammi, I need you in my office.” Her answer was an easy “Absolutely!”

Tammi had known Don for several years through her husband, who worked alongside him at GE. What started as a part-time opportunity quickly grew into a role she loves and a team she considers family.

When she’s not at Top Coat, Tammi enjoys spending time with her family and friends, caring for her beloved four-legged furry companions, creating crafts, volunteering for South Hills Pet Rescue, working with flowers, tackling home projects, and simply enjoying life’s everyday moments. Her positive attitude, organization, and dedication make her an invaluable member of the Top Coat family.
